What NAD+ is
The letters stand for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. Cells rely on it for converting food into usable energy and for powering certain repair enzymes, among them the sirtuins and the PARPs.
Two of its raw ingredients, NR and NMN, are what most human studies hand out. They are related to NAD+ but they are not the same substance, and a result for one is not a result for the other. Because every cell uses NAD+, it is widely studied, and most of those studies use those ingredients.
What has NAD+ research tested?
In 2021, a review looked at how NAD+ levels change as rodents and people age, and at the open question of whether raising them matters. Ways to lift NAD+ with its raw ingredients were the subject of a 2015 review on aging and brain disease.
The biggest summary, from 2026, pooled 113 studies, most of which gave the raw ingredients and measured NAD+ in the blood along with other readings. It found no outcome trial that tested NAD+ itself.
