What the published tirzepatide trials looked at
Tirzepatide has a deep pile of human trial data. In a phase 3 trial reported in 2023, 579 adults with obesity began with a 12 week lifestyle program, and the trial then compared tirzepatide with a placebo over 72 weeks, with body weight as the main measure.
A 2025 trial followed 731 adults who had obesity and a form of heart failure in which the heart still pumps normally, for about two years. It counted heart failure events and deaths from heart causes in each group, tirzepatide against placebo.
Also in 2025, a study in mice and in adults with obesity measured fat burning, hunger and energy use while they were given tirzepatide. It found no change in the usual slowdown of energy use during dieting.
