What Tesamorelin is
GHRH is short for growth hormone releasing hormone. The body sends it to the pituitary, a small gland under the brain, as the go signal for growth hormone. Tesamorelin imitates that signal; it is not growth hormone itself.
In research it is known mainly for one topic: deep belly fat that builds up in adults with HIV.
The three tesamorelin trials compared, all in adults with HIV
The biggest of its trials, from 2007, enrolled 412 adults who had HIV and extra belly fat. Over 26 weeks it compared tesamorelin with a placebo, and CT scans measured deep belly fat at the start and at the end.
A smaller 2014 trial of 50 adults with HIV tracked liver fat as well as belly fat for six months. In 2019, 61 adults who had both HIV and fatty liver joined a year-long trial that measured liver fat. In all three, people were assigned to groups at random and compared against a placebo.

Who do these trials describe?
All three trials summarised here enrolled adults with HIV and extra belly fat, so they describe that group alone. They cannot tell you about anyone else. That narrow group is the main limit of an otherwise careful set of trials.
Tesamorelin is the active ingredient of a prescription medicine in some countries. This research vial is a different product from that medicine, and it carries no approval for use in people.
